Rehabilitation counselor
The task of
rehabilitation counselor is to understand the feeling of person and gives
solution in making his mental and physical states to be in normal condition.
Counselor tries to find the basic cause of disturbance and tries to correct
that factor so that better diagnosis and solution can be provided. Counselor
practicing the rehabilitation work should be compassionate and having the
pleasing personality. In doing, the task there is many model and theories,
which helps such as TWA theory.
The Theory of Work Adjustment (TWA; Dawis &
Lofquist, 1984) grew out of the University of Minnesota's Work Adjustment
Project, a 20-year federally funded research program to study how vocational
rehabilitation clients adjusted to work. The theory of work adjustment (TWA)
signifies the relationship of the individual to his or her work environment.
Earlier it was developed as guiding framework for research and study related to
vocational psychology and today it is most used in that area by the researcher.
TWA leads to the development of the instruments and material such as several
monographs. In theory of work adjustment work is conceptualized as an
interaction between an individual and a work environment.
The counselor tries to
see the problem in broad perspective and provide a variety of solution
according to specific needs and condition. Rehabilitation programs can be done
in varieties of case such as of criminals, drug addict or physically assaulted
women, so the techniques adopted and solution provided in each case should be
different. One solution in particular case may be useless on another so
counselor should be innovative in problem dealing. Moreover, counselor should
love his job and should not perform as routine work.
The work environment
needs a certain task to be performed and individuals require skills to perform
the task. In exchange to hard work and skills, the individuals expect
compensation and better standard of living along with basic food, safety and
shelter. There should be on going interaction between the environment and
individuals to maintain the relation. The degree of maintaining the relation is
known as correspondence. So we can say that work adjustment is way to achieve
and maintain the correspondence and it can measured by individuals with his or
her work environment and condition. Satisfaction and satisfactory lead to tenure,
which is an indicator of work adjustment. Tenure can be
guess from the correspondence of an individual's work personality with the
work environment. Structure and style variables can measure work personalities
and work environment.
