Vinnie Jauhari. (2005) Information technology, corporate business firms and sustainable development: lessons from cases of success from India. Journal of Services Research 5(2): 37-76.
Thesis statement
The use of information
technology not only develops the efficiency of business organization but it also
links the community evolution from the success of the business.
Development
The paper critically
analyzes some of the cases of some success of intervention by the corporate firms,
which lead the community development. The cases highlighted the practices that
can be utilized in any part of the world to get the success in the business.
The situation is win-win both for corporate and the community. The range of
intervention ranges from being very specific to wide in their approach, which
helps grass root level communities to emerge out of the trap. The ITC's case study is an outstanding example of self-sustaining intervention,
which leads to identification of a new business channel, which also empowers
rural communities and brings in efficiency in the business processes
Example- The business development should
have Positive impact on food, shelter, water, education, employment, women
empowerment (as in SWRC Barefoot College initiative). The complex or sophisticated
technologies in many cases are not able to generate the desired effect. For areas,
which have some basic resources, IT and other related technologies can be channelized
as in case of HP and Tarahaat for evolving new commercial products and
services.
Background
1,170 million people lived in extreme
poverty by 1999 (World Bank, 2003). The general
poverty levels have reduced in East Asia and Pacific, in Sub
Saharan Africa, the number of people steeped in extreme poverty increased by 74
million. In present condition, the public sector does not have the
expertise and resources to provide goods and services on a scale sufficient to
spread among the approximately four billion people who presently earning less
than $2000 year. But the private sector has expertise and resources to reach
these people easily.
Conclusion
The research summarizes that the
interventions have to be linked with the stage of development and resource
strength in a particular geographical location. The resource can have different
form such as raw material or work force, which could lead to the turnaround of that
region. The place where the stage of development is low and people do not even
have access to basic amenities the business development should help in developing
the community through the help of technology.
Part-B
Jaipur Rugs Empowering Weavers as Innovators with ICT Mediation in the Supply Chaina) How sustainable is the development based on Jaipur Rugs model for India in political, economic, social, and environmental terms?
Answer- Jaipur
rugs model sustainability model is best suited in Indian context because it involves
the poor work force in one hand and use of innovative technology in other hand.
In India, no scheme is going to get success until it can address the common
people problem. The use of technology help in saving the time through better
utilization and saving time in logistic, transportation and production. In
India it is necessary the intervention should be cheap and there should be low
running cost involve in the process of execution. Jaipur rug model satisfy
these criteria of sustainability. The use of ERP helps in automation in the
process of resources allocation and better efficiency in the production
process.
The main task is to distribute a large task into simple task so the
each part can be executed efficiently. The modern techniques such as PERT and
CPM helps in monitoring the progress of the projects. Im logistic the use FIFO
and just in time inventory techniques helps in saving the time and wastage of
the resources. Seeing the present situation of India, it is necessary that the
techniques of development should be multiphase because it should not be only
economical but also long lasting in nature. India is still a labour excessive
market. The development should also be socially accepted otherwise it creates
division in the society.
b) How transferable is the Jaipur Rugs business system as a model for the other nations that are culturally different?
Answer-
India has unique set of parameter of
development such as abundance of workforce, lesser number of skilled labour,
manual intensive developments techniques and vulnerable political situation. If
we try to fit these techniques of development in other part of the world then
it need some modification. In Europe, the main emphasis is on the quality but
in India the main emphasis is on cost cutting. Some time excessive cost cutting
effects the quality of the products in long run.
Secondly, the society of
western countries is also different from the India because in developed
countries the consumer are more aware of their rights and legal system has more
responsive in comparison to India.
Despite of these minor differences the
Jaipur model suited in different countries because it is sustainable in nature,
cost effective in operation and overall tested for durability in long run.
Before implementing the Jaipur model to other country it is necessary that some
modification should be done to make it compatible with culture of that country.
