Russian dolls and Matryoshkas
Russian dolls and Matryoshkas
Communication analogy
can be linked to Matryoshka dolls or Russian nesting dolls. These dolls consist
of seemingly endless series of wooden figures which can be pulled apart to
reveal another figure with some resemblance or common motif inside. The adult
person could think a Russian doll as a discrete unit but a part of the larger
system highly connected with the life of other. There are two paths ahead of
single individual, first is to change him according to others and second is to
change others according to will of himself. Generally, people adopt the path of
least resistance and adjust themselves according to the situation. To change
others according to his will should demand the tough and dominant
characteristic to bind others to change according to them.
Russian dolls and Matryoshkas used metaphorically,
as a design paradigm, called as the "matryoshka principle" or
"nested doll principle". It is used to signify the recognizable
relationship of "object-within-similar-object" that has presence in
the design of many other natural and crafted objects. Examples of this use in
present time are the Matrioshka brain and the Matroska media-container format. The
"matryoshka principle" is an example of Mise-en-abyme. Compare with
Fractal also. The concept can be better learns through the onion metaphor,
which is of similar character. If the outer layer is peeled off an onion, a
similar onion exists within. This structure is employed by designers in
applications such as the layering of clothes or the design of tables, where a
smaller table nests within a larger table and a yet smaller one within that.
Our personal growth is
both supported and expressed by three interrelated level of wholeness that are
perpetually interacting within us, around us and beyond us
- Universal wholeness: It, Thou, how the world, universe and, if we believe, God moves towards completeness
- Communal wholeness: We, us as a group, how organizations, communities and cultures move towards completeness
- Individual wholeness: I, you as an individual, how the individual moves towards completeness
Each level represents a plane in which growth occurs. Within every
level, there are several forces competing, opposing each other and driving
towards the desired state. So individuals are both mover and being moved
because person acts and sometime being forced to act according to the
situation.
The next level of Russian dolls can be linked to communal wholeness,
which is the situation to see recognizable trappings of culture and society.
This shows that growth could be found by adopting, “WE” perspective. The last
level of the Russian nesting dolls is that of the individual where person moves
towards completeness. Individual’s growth gives personal satisfaction, which
guides skills and behaviour. All three levels affect each other, for example,
markets are manifestations universal wholeness.
