god of heaven, they respected and respected the king. Respect and honor that
the King has provoked the envy of the gods of heaven. They planned to remove
King Mahabali. He sent Vishnu to the king at the foundation of a Brahman boy
named Vishnu. Vaman appeared in the court of the king and requested a piece of
land that could be covered by three small steps. He needed that land for the mediation
purpose. King agreed to fulfill his request for such a small piece. As soon as
the king agreed, Vamans appeared in his true form and covered the whole area of
earth and heaven in only two stages. There was no place for the third phase.
King Mahabali bowed his head for the third step. There was
no place left for the king to live on earth or in heaven. However, he had an
opportunity to live around the world. After getting permission to stay in the
underworld, Mahabali requested Lord Vishnu to visit his kingdom once a year to
see his subjects. This request of the king was given by Vishnu. Onam festival

Another version
According to Vaishnava mythology, it is said that Mahabali
defeated the Gods and came to power by taking the three worlds. The gods were
unhappy with their popularity and sought the help of Lord Vishnu in the war
against the King of Demons. Vishnu agreed to help but did not want to take part
in the war because Mahabali was his enthusiastic devotee. Instead, to help
other deities, he took the form of a poor dwarf Brahman (his Vaman Avatar) from
Duswatar and visited Mahabali, asking the king to give him three best wishes.
Arguing that no one should ask more than anyone's needs, Brahman requested
property on a piece of land which measures "three steps", on which
Mahabali agreed to know that for a while He was behaving with God.
Soon, the dwarf size has increased and everything covered
has been ruled by Mahabali in only two stages. For the third phase, Mahabali
offered his head, in which Vishnu kept his feet on the king's head and thus,
put him in the lower world. But influenced by the devotion and good deeds of
Mahabali, Vishnu allowed him to return to the earth once a year - this is an
annual journey which is celebrated with more praise as Onam. The Onam festival
continues for four days. During these days, young women in Kerala bath, they
wear beautiful clothes and go out to throw flowers. Together with these
flowers, they prepare Rangoli for the King's reception. Statues of King
Mahabali and Lord Vishnu have been established. The lamp is in the light, the
incense is burnt and prayer and worship is done. On the last day of Onam,
Rangoli is submerged in the river or sea water.
