According to Vaishnava mythology, it is said that Mahabali defeated the Gods and came to power by taking the three worlds. The gods were unhappy with their popularity and sought the help of Lord Vishnu in the war against the King of Demons. Vishnu agreed to help but did not want to take part in the war because Mahabali was his enthusiastic devotee. Instead, to help other deities, he took the form of a poor dwarf Brahman (his Vaman Avatar) from Duswatar and visited Mahabali, asking the king to give him three best wishes. Arguing that no one should ask more than anyone's needs, Brahman requested property on a piece of land which measures "three steps", on which Mahabali agreed to know that for a while He was behaving with God.

Soon, the dwarf size has increased and everything covered has been ruled by Mahabali in only two stages. For the third phase, Mahabali offered his head, in which Vishnu kept his feet on the king's head and thus, put him in the lower world.
